Italy’s President Condemns Israeli Strikes in Lebanon

(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday criticized the continuing Israeli military operations in Lebanon, describing the attacks as "brutal" and warning that they are worsening civilian suffering while increasing the danger of broader instability across the Middle East.

Speaking to members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Italy, Mattarella said the turmoil unfolding across the region demonstrates how destructive actions can quickly spread and inspire similar behavior elsewhere.

Referring to the war in Gaza as a “clear example,” he cautioned that the conflict carries the potential to expand beyond its current boundaries, creating the risk of a wider confrontation extending from Iran throughout the Middle East.

Mattarella noted that the ongoing crisis is already “severely and unjustly affecting civilian populations in Lebanon.”

He also stressed that encouraging hostility and deepening divisions “will only lead us down the path of war and prolonged conflict.”
