India, Vietnam Forge Stronger Defense Ties

(MENAFN) Vietnamese Defense Minister Phan Van Giang and Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh convened in Hanoi on Tuesday for high-level talks aimed at broadening the two nations' defense partnership across a sweeping range of strategic domains.

The ministers reviewed the existing India-Vietnam defense framework and examined concrete avenues to deepen collaboration in maritime security, the defense industry, military training, and regional stability, according to a statement from the Indian Defense Ministry.

Phan called for sustaining robust high-level delegation exchanges and continuing annual cooperation mechanisms as essential tools for building political trust and reinforcing bilateral defense ties, while also pushing for expanded training collaboration, state-run Vietnam.vn reported.

Singh echoed that ambition, expressing strong interest in advancing joint training and capacity-building initiatives, as well as fostering tighter coordination across the various branches of both nations' armed forces.

The two sides sealed agreements to broaden inter-military cooperation across several frontier areas — including defense industries, UN peacekeeping missions, cybersecurity, military medicine, and search and rescue operations.

In a symbolic gesture underscoring growing people-to-people and institutional ties, the ministers jointly inaugurated a Language Lab at Vietnam's Air Force Officers College. They also exchanged a landmark memorandum of understanding covering artificial intelligence and quantum technology — signaling a new high-tech dimension to the bilateral defense relationship.

Singh's Hanoi visit, spanning Monday and Tuesday, forms part of a broader regional tour that will next take him to South Korea.

The defense dialogue builds on fresh diplomatic momentum. Vietnamese President To Lam traveled to India earlier this month for his first state visit since assuming office in April, during which the two countries agreed to elevate their relationship to an "enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership" and set an ambitious bilateral trade target of $25 billion by 2030. That summit also produced 13 memorandums of understanding spanning rare earth minerals, culture, and cross-border digital payments.
