Fire Breaks Out at Major Australian Geelong Oil Refinery
Authorities said the blaze was contained within a section of the facility known as the transfer area and did not directly impact the production of diesel, petrol, or other petroleum products.
Fire Rescue Victoria Deputy Commissioner Michelle Cowling said the incident was not expected to worsen existing fuel supply pressures, noting, “So that won't add to the already stressed fuel issues that we're having,”
Officials described the firefighting operation as complex, explaining that part of the incident involved an LPG tower with an open valve that could not be directly accessed due to extreme heat. Engineers were reportedly working remotely to drain the system in order to bring the situation under control.
The refinery’s operator, Viva Energy, has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the plant continued to produce diesel and jet fuel, though at reduced capacity as a precautionary measure. Victoria’s Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio also stated that there was no immediate disruption to fuel supply, despite some production units being temporarily scaled back for safety reasons.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The Corio facility processes around 120,000 barrels of crude oil per day, accounting for roughly half of Victoria’s fuel demand and about 10% of Australia’s overall fuel supply.
