Rubio Set to Host Direct Talks Between Israel, Lebanon

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will personally chair a landmark round of direct peace negotiations between Israel and Lebanon at the State Department on Tuesday, according to the official diplomatic schedule.

Rubio is scheduled to convene the session at 11 am local time, hosting Israeli ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad as part of a broader US-led push to broker a lasting ceasefire agreement.

The meeting represents the formal launch of direct bilateral negotiations between the two nations — widely considered among the most significant high-level exchanges between Jerusalem and Beirut in decades.

Talks are expected to center on three core issues: securing a ceasefire, the disarmament of Hezbollah, and the architecture of a wider peace arrangement between the two countries.

The diplomatic push comes as fighting grinds on across southern Lebanon, where the Israeli military has dramatically escalated both its air campaign and ground operations in the wake of the Iran war. The conflict has claimed more than 2,000 lives and displaced upwards of one million people since early March.

Hezbollah, however, has moved swiftly to distance itself from the process, denouncing the Washington talks as "futile" and pressing the Lebanese government to abandon the negotiations in favor of confronting what it called Israeli "aggression."
