UN Security Council Denounces Israeli Attacks on UNIFIL in Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday strongly condemned Israeli strikes targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in southern Lebanon late last month, which resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to Indonesia," the council said in a statement.

According to reports, five additional personnel were wounded in the incidents. The council also highlighted a pattern of attacks impacting UNIFIL positions, noting that peacekeepers were harmed "against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line."

"They wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured. They paid tribute to the dedication and service of all United Nations peacekeepers who risk their lives in the cause of international peace and security and expressed their deep appreciation to UNIFIL’s troop-contributing countries," the statement added.

The council reiterated its unwavering backing for UNIFIL and urged all sides involved to ensure the protection of its personnel, infrastructure, and operational freedom, in line with international law. It also called for restraint from any actions that might endanger peacekeepers.

Furthermore, the statement emphasized that peacekeeping forces must never be deliberately targeted and called for an investigation into the incidents through UNIFIL, with updates provided to the countries contributing troops, as required under existing Security Council mandates.

The council also stressed the importance of fully implementing Resolution 1701 and reaffirmed its strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.
