Asian Markets Slide as Trump Comments Dim Hopes for Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Asian financial markets dropped sharply on Thursday after remarks by US President Donald Trump cast doubt on prospects for a quick resolution to the conflict with Iran, shaking investor confidence across the region.

By 0620 GMT, Japan’s Nikkei 225 had fallen 2.53%, while South Korea’s Kospi experienced a steep decline of 5.55%. Other major regional indices also suffered losses, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng down 1.44%, China’s Shanghai Composite slipping 1.14%, and India’s Sensex retreating 1.91%, reflecting a resurgence of caution among investors.

The selloff followed Trump’s statements indicating that US military actions against Iran would continue, providing no clear indication of de-escalation and disappointing those who had anticipated progress toward a ceasefire or diplomatic resolution.

“We’re going to hit them extremely hard. Over the next two to three weeks. We’re going to bring them back to the Stone Age, where they belong,” Trump said.

These remarks reversed prior optimism that hostilities might soon ease, triggering widespread losses in Asian equities. The regional downturn mirrored broader global market trends, as investors reconsidered the possibility of an imminent reduction in Middle East tensions.
