Trump Calls on Allies to Seize Strait of Hormuz Amid War on Iran

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has called on nations that rely on Middle Eastern oil to take control of the Strait of Hormuz by force if Iran does not reopen the strategic shipping lane for all vessels.

Trump made the statement in his first address to the nation on Wednesday, following weeks of criticism toward NATO allies for declining to send warships to the region or participate in US-Israeli military operations.

“To those countries that can’t get fuel, many of which refuse to get involved in the decapitation of Iran… build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait and just take it. Protect it,” Trump said. He argued that securing the strait would be straightforward, noting that US forces had “decimated” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and “dramatically curtailed” its drone and missile capabilities.

During his address, Trump also pledged to escalate airstrikes over the next two to three weeks, indicating that the conflict could continue if Iran refuses to comply with US demands.

The US-Israeli military campaign against Iran has sparked a global energy crisis, driving oil prices sharply higher and increasing fuel costs worldwide. The conflict has severely restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel that handles approximately one-fifth of global oil exports.

Global crude prices have surged above $100 per barrel, with Brent crude climbing roughly 60% in March to around $118, while US West Texas Intermediate exceeded $100, marking one of the largest monthly gains in decades. US consumers have felt the impact directly, as average gasoline prices rose above $4 per gallon this week, the first time since 2022.
