Trump Criticizes UK Over Stance on Iran Conflict
Trump told reporters he was “not happy” with the UK, insisting it “should be involved enthusiastically” in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. He added at a press conference that “some countries that greatly disappointed me” and specifically singled out the UK, which he noted had once been considered “the Rolls-Royce of allies.”
The remarks came after UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said Britain would not be drawn into a “wider war” but was coordinating with allies on a “viable, collective plan” to reopen the strait. Sir Keir also noted that minehunters were already deployed in the region, though no decisions had yet been made on further action.
Oil prices have surged following Iran’s effective closure of the world’s busiest oil shipping channel, and Tehran has threatened attacks on any ships linked to the US, with sea mines adding to the risks, as stated by reports. Trump has repeatedly urged the UK and other nations to send warships to the Gulf to protect the passage.
Previously, Trump was angered when the UK denied the US use of its bases for initial strikes on Iran, though permission has since been granted for defensive operations against Iranian missile attacks.
Speaking in Washington, Trump said he sometimes asks world leaders to assist with the Strait of Hormuz “not because we need them but because I want to find out how they're reacting.”
He added he was “very surprised” by the UK’s attitude toward the war and referenced their joint efforts in Ukraine.
