UK Confirms Drone Targeting RAF Base Did Not Originate from Iran

(MENAFN) Britain’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday that a drone which targeted a Royal Air Force base in the Greek Cypriot Administration earlier this week did not originate from Iran, while confirming that British forces have continued defensive missions across the Middle East.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, defense officials clarified the origin of the unmanned aircraft that attempted to strike the RAF facility.

"The Ministry of Defense can confirm that a Shahed-like drone which targeted RAF Akrotiri at midnight on 2nd March was not launched from Iran," the ministry said in a statement posted on the US social media company X’s platform.

The ministry also outlined recent British military operations in the region, noting that RAF Typhoon and F-35B fighter jets carried out overnight defensive patrols throughout the Middle East aimed at safeguarding UK interests and supporting allied forces. These missions were assisted by Voyager air-to-air refueling aircraft.

According to the statement, the United Kingdom has also delivered additional air defense supplies to British and partner bases across the region during the past 24 hours, including missiles manufactured in the UK for air defense systems.

"Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters — armed with Martlet missiles capable of taking out aerial threats — will arrive in Cyprus in the coming days," the statement added.

British authorities previously indicated that one drone landed on the runway at RAF Akrotiri but did not cause casualties, injuries or significant damage. Two other drones that were approaching the base were intercepted before reaching the site.

Britain maintains two military installations in the Greek Cypriot Administration.
