UK Mulls Sending Warship to Protect RAF Base in Cyprus

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is considering sending a Royal Navy warship to the Greek Cypriot Administration to strengthen security at a key Royal Air Force base, amid recent drone incidents in the region.

Defense Secretary John Healey is reportedly evaluating the deployment of the destroyer HMS Duncan to the Mediterranean to enhance defenses at RAF Akrotiri, located at the southern tip of Cyprus. Multiple sources indicate that discussions are ongoing due to concerns over the base’s air defense vulnerabilities.

The potential move follows a drone crash at RAF Akrotiri on Sunday, which caused minimal damage and no injuries. Additional drones have since been intercepted near the base.

Currently, no major Royal Navy ships are operating in the Middle East, and HMS Duncan, which is docked in Portsmouth, is known for counter-drone capabilities. Last month, it participated in an exercise off the coast of Wales involving drone swarm simulations.

If the deployment is approved, it is expected to take several days for the warship to reach the Mediterranean.
