Canadian PM denounces assault on Muslim man in Toronto
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned an Islamophobic attack on a Muslim man in northern Toronto, describing the incident as “appalling,” according to reports.
Speaking on social media platform X, Carney emphasized that “acts of violence and Islamophobia have no place in Canada,” and added, “The authorities have my full support as they work to bring the perpetrator to justice.”
The attack occurred in late September in Markham, where a 54-year-old hotel night auditor was confronted by two customers who asked about his ethnic and religious background. After one of the customers initially left the hotel, he returned and allegedly attacked the man upon learning that he was Muslim, leaving him with life-altering injuries.
Local authorities reported that the Hate Crime Prevention Unit charged 31-year-old Geethansan Sriranjan, who “told the victim he was going to kill him and chased him to a room, where he was violently assaulted.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford also condemned the assault, calling it “completely unacceptable,” and stated, “Our government stands with Ontario's Muslim community and will always fight back against Islamophobia in all its forms.”
