According to a police statement, the wooden vessel was en route from Muchora Abino A village to accompany a catechist to a burial when it capsized near Kiryanga Village in Acii Sub-County around 11:00 a.m. local time.
“A total of 36 people were on board and 29 survived the accident. The incident happened approximately 400 meters from the Kiryanga landing site when the engine boat hit a stationary tree stump, causing it to capsize,” the statement detailed.
The bodies of the victims were transported to Amolatar Health Centre IV mortuary for post-mortem examinations, police confirmed.
Boat accidents frequently occur on Uganda’s lakes, with overloading and adverse weather conditions commonly cited as contributing factors.
