UK introduces regulations to limit illegal content online
On Monday, Ofcom launched a consultation inviting feedback on additional measures designed to better protect users—especially children—from online risks.
Among the proposed steps is the possibility that larger platforms might need to actively monitor and detect terrorist content under tightened safety rules.
Oliver Griffiths, director of Ofcom’s online safety group, explained that these proposals aim to build on current UK regulations while addressing “constantly evolving” digital threats.
“We’re holding platforms to account and launching swift enforcement action where we have concerns,” he said. “But technology and harms are constantly evolving, and we’re always looking at how we can make life safer online.”
Ofcom’s consultation focuses on three key priorities: preventing illegal content from going viral, addressing harmful material at its source, and providing stronger protections for children.
The regulator’s proposals cover a range of concerns, from abuse involving intimate images to the risks posed when viewers witness physical harm during livestreams. The rules may vary depending on the platform’s size and content type.
