South Korean Military Court Extends Detention of Generals
(MENAFN) A military tribunal in Seoul on Monday prolonged the confinement of two senior South Korean military officers accused of involvement in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law attempt, according to a news agency.
The court approved the extension for Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyung and Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho, both top-ranking intelligence figures. The decision was made due to concerns that the pair could tamper with or eliminate vital evidence.
Initially, the prosecution had submitted a motion to release the officers on bail. However, that motion was later retracted after the two were formally charged earlier this month with "perjury" and breaching military confidentiality regulations.
This legal move coincided with a fresh request by ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol, who on Monday sought to defer his second interrogation by a special prosecutor concerning his martial law initiative.
Yoon requested that the session be moved from Tuesday to Thursday or later to allow coordination with his legal advisors. Nevertheless, the prosecution turned down his appeal.
A representative from the special counsel’s team emphasized that the refusal stood firm, underlining that if Yoon failed to attend Tuesday's session, a new date would be arranged within the same week without delay.
Yoon had already faced questioning last Saturday before the special counsel over "insurrection" allegations tied to his declaration of martial law on December 3.
The constitutional court removed Yoon from office in April after his unsuccessful attempt to enforce martial rule. He had been apprehended and formally accused in January of "abuse of power" and orchestrating an "insurrection."
