Indian investigation turns to potential terror motive after deadly blast
The blast occurred during rush hour inside a car near a metro station close to the historic Red Fort, a heavily visited 17th-century monument. Authorities said police were examining “all angles.”
Local officials have opened a case under the country’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act — legislation typically used when terror links are suspected — according to reports. Recent enforcement actions across the region have included several arrests and seizures tied to alleged plots, reinforcing concerns about an organized threat.
In one operation over the weekend, two people were detained and around 2,900 kg of material used to make improvised explosive devices and other bomb components were seized in Faridabad, part of the Delhi–National Capital Region. Other recent arrests in different states have been reported in connection with alleged links to extremist groups.
The blast in Delhi comes on the back of earlier high-profile attacks that have raised tensions with neighboring Pakistan; authorities previously warned a future terror strike could be treated as an act of war.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on an official visit abroad, said he has been kept informed by security agencies and vowed a thorough response: “Our agencies will get to the bottom of this conspiracy,” he said, adding, “Those responsible will not be spared. All those responsible will be brought to justice.”
