Migrants die due to boat overturning near Malaysia-Thailand boarder

(MENAFN) At least 13 migrants have died and 13 others were rescued after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees capsized near the maritime border between Malaysia and Thailand, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to reports, seven bodies were recovered by Malaysian authorities, while six others were found on the Thai side.

"We expect to discover more victims today, as sea current patterns in the search area indicate that they are drifting towards Malaysian waters," said Maritime 1st Adm. Romli Mustafa. He added that the search and rescue zone had been expanded to more than 250 square nautical miles.

The migrants reportedly departed Myanmar aboard a larger vessel carrying around 300 people, which later transferred them to three smaller boats. One of those vessels overturned, while the fate of the other two remains unclear, according to earlier reports.

The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority in Myanmar, have long fled the country to escape violence, discrimination, and statelessness. The situation has worsened amid ongoing civil conflict following the 2021 military coup, deepening the nation’s humanitarian crisis.
